Navarinou

The stone remnants on Navarinou Street are the jagged edges of a late Roman fortification wall, constructed in the late third century. Athens built these barriers in a desperate hurry after a massive raid by the Heruli destroyed much of the city. For centuries, this masonry sat buried under layers of urban development. When workers broke ground here in the late nineteen sixties to lay foundations for a new building, they hit these ancient blocks instead, halting construction for good.
