The southern side of ACROS Fukuoka features a tiered, fifteen-story garden rising directly from the sidewalk. Architect Emilio Ambasz designed this mountain of greenery to replace a former prefectural office, aiming to give the city back its open space. The roof holds fifty thousand plants across its terraces, turning a concrete office building into a hanging forest. When it opened in nineteen ninety-five, a local gardener spent his first week pruning the plants while tethered to a rope for safety.
