The red wooden pagoda rises five stories above the street in Hakata. This is Tochoji Temple, founded in eight hundred six by the monk Kukai after he returned from study in China. It serves as the primary temple for the Shingon sect in Kyushu. During the sixteenth century, Toyotomi Hideyoshi rebuilt the temple after a fire during his campaign to pacify the region, moving it to its current location to help restore order to the devastated city.
