The Tenjin Building basement dining arcade sits beneath a nondescript office tower that defines the Fukuoka skyline. Its entrance is marked by a modest, utilitarian staircase leading down into a maze of low-ceilinged corridors. This subterranean floor was built in nineteen sixty-two, serving as one of the city's earliest examples of a purpose-built food street. Office workers still crowd the narrow aisles every weekday at noon, chasing quick bowls of ramen or set meals in stalls that have occupied the same tight corners for decades.
