Kushida Shrine

The Kushida Shrine features an enormous, colorful float displayed year-round under a tall, open-air pavilion. This structure, known as a yamakasa, serves as the centerpiece of the Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival held every July. The shrine dates back to seven hundred fifty-seven, when it was established to provide a local center for worship. Local residents have gathered here for centuries to pray for business prosperity and good health, maintaining traditions that define the spirit of Hakata’s oldest district.
