Suikyo Tenmangu Shrine

religious

The Suikyo Tenmangu Shrine sits behind a stone torii gate in the middle of Fukuoka’s shopping district. Its name comes from a mirror of water, referring to the local legend that the scholar Sugawara no Michizane paused here to gaze at his reflection. He was on his way to exile in Dazaifu, adjusting his robes after a long journey from Kyoto. While other shrines honor him as a deity of learning, this one marks a singular moment of personal distress.
