Oya House

The Oya House stands out for its steeply pitched, thatch-covered roof that dominates the narrow street. This is a residence built in the late nineteenth century for a local merchant family, designed to endure the heavy, wet snowfalls of the Kanazawa winters. Inside, the heavy timber frame supports a second floor once used for silk production, where the family kept silkworms during the colder months. The deep eaves and dark, weathered wood show the original craftsmanship of a city known for preserving its history.
