Akao Shobundo Bookshop

other

A narrow wooden storefront sits along the street, its facade defined by hundreds of weathered, cloth-bound books stacked right up to the glass. This is Akao Shobundo, a shop specializing in ukiyo-e woodblock prints and illustrated books from the Edo period. It has occupied this spot since eighteen eighty-four. While other Kyoto shops pivoted toward modern paper goods, the Akao family kept their inventory focused on original woodcuts and rare historical texts, maintaining the same inventory focus for over five generations.
