Biblioteca Vasconcelos

educational

The Biblioteca Vasconcelos features shelves that appear to float in midair, suspended by steel rods from the ceiling across a cavernous, transparent atrium. Designed by Alberto Kalach and finished in two thousand six, this massive structure holds nearly six hundred thousand books within a garden setting. When the library opened, engineers discovered that the weight of the volumes and the shifting soil caused the shelves to sag, forcing a temporary closure to reinforce the entire skeletal framework of the building.
