Mother's Monument

The Monument to the Mother features a central stone sculpture of a woman holding a child, flanked by two other figures carved into a wide, curving wall. It sits on the busy corner of Insurgentes and Sullivan, marking a shift from the colonial architecture nearby to the mid-twentieth-century urban landscape. In nineteen forty-four, the president laid the first stone, intending to honor the archetype of the Mexican mother. Construction stopped during the war, and the statue was eventually finished by sculptor Luis Ortiz Monasterio.
