Monument to Cuauhtémoc

The Monument to Cuauhtémoc features a bronze statue of the final Aztec emperor standing atop a high, tiered base inspired by pre-Hispanic architecture. Miguel Noreña designed the statue for the eighteen eighty-seven World Exposition in Paris, placing Cuauhtémoc in a defiant, traditional warrior pose. When the monument returned to Mexico City, the engineers struggled to move the massive stone base, eventually relying on a specialized rail system to drag it into position at this intersection, where it replaced a planned fountain.
