The Ras El Ma spring emerges directly from the base of the Rif Mountains, creating a constant, frigid flow of water that feeds the public laundry basins below. For generations, the women of Chefchaouen have gathered here to wash clothes, scrub rugs, and share neighborhood news in the open air. In the nineteen eighties, the city reinforced the stone troughs and tiled the surrounding pathways, but the rhythm of the work remained unchanged since the water first reached the city walls.
