Kasbah Chefchaouen

The Kasbah of Chefchaouen wears a distinct reddish-brown tint, setting its rough stone walls apart from the sea of blue-washed buildings nearby. Moulay Ali ben Moussa ben Rached El Alami built this fortress in fourteen seventy-one to organize the defense of the region against Portuguese invaders. Inside the high walls, the Sultan included a small prison. Legend says that in the early twentieth century, a local prisoner carved a poem into his cell wall that visitors can still trace with their fingers today.
