Former Church Saint Anthony the Great

The former Church of Saint Anthony the Great stands out because of its square, tiered bell tower topped with a simple cross, an architectural shape that feels entirely foreign against the curved arches and flat roofs of Chefchaouen. Built by Spanish Franciscans in nineteen twelve, it served the small Catholic population during the Spanish protectorate. When the church closed following Moroccan independence, the building transitioned through several uses, including a public library, leaving the altar space to house books instead of religious icons.
