Plaza Uta el Hamman

Plaza Uta el Hamman is the red-walled heart of Chefchaouen, defined by the distinct horseshoe arches of the Great Mosque and the rusted stone walls of the Kasbah. It was founded in the fifteen hundreds by Moulay Ali Ben Moussa Ben Rached El Alami, who used the square as a gathering point for refugees fleeing the fall of Granada. Locals still recall how the square functioned as a marketplace for decades, where merchants from the mountains traded wool and grain under the trees.
