Plaza Uta el-Hammam centers on a distinctive, ochre-colored kasbah with jagged battlements that contrast sharply against the surrounding blue-washed buildings. Built in the fifteenth century by Moulay Ali Ben Moussa Ben Rached El Alami, this fortress served as a stronghold to launch attacks against the Portuguese. While visitors now gather in the surrounding cafes to watch the square, a local man once kept his prisoner, the last Emir of Granada, inside these walls for months after his defeat in Spain.
