Bab el ain

Bab el Ain functions as the primary western gateway into the old medina of Chefchaouen. Its heavy stone archway stands out against the surrounding whitewashed walls, bearing the weight of a square watchtower built directly overhead. Centuries ago, local officials used this tower to monitor those arriving from the mountain paths. A man named Ali ben Rachid established the town here in fourteen seventy-one as a fortress against Portuguese invaders, and he made this gate the essential point of entry for his soldiers.
