Fire Boundary Marking

A band of red light tiles set directly into the pavement marks the boundary of the nineteen forty city center bombing. These markers trace the line where the German aerial bombardment stopped, effectively cutting the city into two distinct eras. The project came from a desire to make the invisible scars of the war tangible underfoot. While many cities rebuilt over their ruins, Rotterdam chose to keep this jagged edge visible, forcing pedestrians to cross from the historic past into the modern rebuild.
