The bronze figure of a woman, seated with her legs crossed and clutching a guitar, sits on a stone base in the middle of the Coolsingel. Henri Laurens cast this sculpture in nineteen thirty-eight. It arrived in Rotterdam during the final months of the second world war, tucked away in storage to protect it from the widespread destruction of the city center. When the fighting stopped, the city council placed the work here to mark the beginning of the post-war reconstruction of Rotterdam.
