Willemsplein

Willemsplein is dominated by the tall, stone obelisk of the Scheepvaartmonument, which honors the sailors who lost their lives during the second world war. This open square serves as a quiet transition between the bustling city center and the banks of the Maas river. During the nineteen forties, the area was almost completely leveled by aerial bombardments, and the square eventually became the site where the city gathered to memorialize those lost at sea. It remains a place of reflection near the water.
