Marines Museum

The Mariniersmuseum sits tucked along the Wijnhaven canal, identified by the heavy, dark anchor resting outside its entrance. This building serves as a home for the history of the Netherlands Marine Corps, founded in sixteen sixty-five. During the German invasion of nineteen forty, Dutch marines held the Maas bridges here against overwhelming odds, earning the city the nickname Brave Rotterdam. That desperate defense forced the German command to rethink their strategy, permanently linking the identity of these marines to this specific canal side.
