Wijnhaven

The Wijnhaven remains defined by its unusually wide, calm stretch of water cutting through the dense city center. Originally dug in the early sixteenth century, this harbor served as a vital basin for merchants unloading barrels of wine and spirits directly into their warehouses. While the intense bombing of May nineteen forty destroyed almost every building surrounding the quay, the basin stayed. Today, the water reflects a mix of post-war housing and modern high-rise apartments, keeping the footprint of Rotterdam's oldest maritime trade.
