The Groothandelsgebouw wears a rugged, grid-like concrete facade that stretches across seven stories, interrupted only by the deep, inset windows that give it the appearance of a massive filing cabinet. Built between nineteen forty-five and nineteen fifty-three, it served as the anchor for Rotterdam’s post-war reconstruction. When the city center lay in ruins, this building provided a single, centralized hub for wholesale merchants to restart trade. During the opening, Queen Juliana arrived by car, driving directly inside the ground floor atrium.
