Melief Bender features a dark wooden storefront and a curved, stained-glass window that distinguishes it from the surrounding stone architecture. It opened in nineteen twelve as a Dutch brown café, a name earned from the dark wood paneling and nicotine-stained walls that were once common in city pubs. While many original interiors in Rotterdam disappeared during the reconstruction after the war, this bar survived. It remains the oldest café in the city, operating in the same spot for over a century.
