Chabot Museum

The Chabot Museum sits inside a white, cubic villa built in nineteen thirty-eight, its smooth, curved facade standing in stark contrast to the traditional brick architecture of the surrounding neighborhood. It holds the work of Henk Chabot, a painter who refused to leave Rotterdam during the second world war. While others fled, Chabot stayed and painted the destruction of the city from his garden. He hid his canvases in crates and buried them in the ground to protect them from the invading army.
