The facade of Café-Restaurant De Unie is a flat, grid-like composition of primary colors, black lines, and large rectangles that looks like a painting by Piet Mondrian standing on the sidewalk. Architect Jacobus Oud designed this building in nineteen twenty-five as a temporary structure intended to last only ten years. The owner wanted a bold, modern face for his business, and Oud used the radical aesthetic of the De Stijl movement to grab the attention of every passerby on the busy Mauritsweg.
