Café De Ouwehoer

Café De Ouwehoer stands out for its bright red front door and a heavy anchor chain draped across the brickwork. It occupies a space that once served as a brothel for sailors docking in the busy Katendrecht harbor. When the port moved away, the neighborhood changed, but this building kept its name. The Dutch phrase ouwehoer translates to old whore, a direct reference to the women who once entertained merchant marines here during the nineteen fifties and sixties.
