Canteen Walhalla

cultural

The Canteen Walhalla is a small, bright red building tucked onto the quay of Katendrecht. It serves as a theater and a bar, but its history reaches back to the nineteen twenties when it operated as a literal canteen for the sailors coming off the massive steamships docked in Rotterdam harbor. Sailors found cheap food, strong drinks, and a place to rest after months at sea. It survived the bombings of the second world war and decades of the harbor's shifting fortunes.
