The Rynek Podgórski is defined by the twin neo-Gothic spires of Saint Joseph’s Church that loom over the square. Before eighteen ninety-eight, this was the central marketplace of a separate, independent city called Podgórze. Mayor Edward Zucker pushed for the construction of this grand church to prove that Podgórze was a modern, thriving urban center, distinct from its neighbor, Kraków. Zucker died before the church finished, and his funeral procession was the first major event held within the incomplete, roofless nave.
