Old Synagogue

The Old Synagogue in Kazimierz is identified by its heavy, fortress-like stone walls and its distinctive two-gabled roofline. Built in the fifteenth century, it serves as the oldest synagogue building still standing in Poland. During the Nazi occupation, the interior was gutted and the structure functioned as a storage depot. In the fifties, workers restoring the building discovered a massive hoard of medieval coins hidden within a wall. Today, the building houses a collection of Jewish religious artifacts and ceremonial objects.
