Remains of the Ghetto wall

The curved stone segment standing here is a fragment of the wall that enclosed the Kraków Ghetto during the German occupation. Unlike the traditional rectangular layout of city walls, the barriers built here were shaped like Jewish tombstones to mock the people forced inside. In nineteen forty-one, authorities sealed fifteen thousand Jews into this district, forcing them into a space previously occupied by three thousand residents. Families lived in single rooms, and the wall remained the border between life and death for two years.
