Ghetto Heroes Square

The seventy oversized metal chairs scattered across Ghetto Heroes Square mark the location of the main transit point for Kraków’s Jewish population during the German occupation. Each chair represents a thousand human lives lost during the liquidation of the ghetto. When the square was cleared, people left behind their furniture and belongings, piling them on the sidewalk because they had no way to carry them. These bronze casts hold that emptiness, standing permanently on the pavement where families were forced to assemble.
