St. Mary's Basilica

religious

St. Mary's Basilica is marked by two uneven towers reaching toward the sky, one topped with an ornate Gothic spire and the other capped by a Renaissance dome. This brick church stands on the edge of the Main Market Square. Every hour, a trumpeter plays a tune from the taller tower that ends abruptly, memorializing a watchman who was struck in the throat by a Mongol arrow while signaling an attack in the thirteenth century. The melody cuts off exactly where he fell.
