MNK Sukiennice

museum

The Sukiennice features a long, high-roofed arcade decorated with grotesque masks carved into the stone of the columns. It sits at the center of the Main Market Square as a medieval trade hall built for the city’s cloth merchants. In fifteen seventy-nine, the building burned in a massive fire that destroyed the interior. The architect Giovanni Maria Padovano redesigned the upper floor, adding those decorative masks and the iconic attic parapet that still defines the city’s skyline today.
