Porta ou Arco de Mazarelos

The Porta de Mazarelos stands as the final remaining gateway of the seven medieval portals that once pierced the city walls of Santiago de Compostela. Its distinct rounded arch, built from large, weathered granite blocks, marks the historical entry point for wine merchants bringing their barrels into the city to avoid heavy taxes at other gates. In seventeen fifty-two, the writer Joseph Cornide noted that this gate retained a singular importance for the city’s commerce, housing the municipal weights and measures.
