Praza das Praterías

historic

The Praza das Praterías sits against the southern transept of the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral. Its most distinct feature is the Porta das Praterías, the only Romanesque portal remaining on the building. Silverworkers occupied the workshops lining this square during the Middle Ages, hammering precious metals for pilgrims arriving at the shrine. In eleven seventeen, a mob trapped Queen Urraca of Leon and Castile inside the cathedral, pelting the clergy with stones and burning the wooden doors while she struggled for political control.
