Rúa da Porta Faxeira

Rua da Porta Faxeira holds a sharp, narrow archway of heavy granite blocks that marks a historic entrance to the walled city of Santiago de Compostela. It takes its name from the fardeles, or sacks of goods, carried by pilgrims and merchants passing through this gate from the sea. In the eighteenth century, architect Clemente Fernandez Sarela rebuilt the structure to accommodate the growing flow of travelers, leaving behind the distinctive masonry that still frames the passage today.
