Rúa da Acibechería

The Rúa da Acibechería ends at the northern facade of the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral. Its name comes from the jet carvers, the acibecheiros, who occupied this street during the Middle Ages. They fashioned rosaries, charms, and pendants from black jet for pilgrims arriving at the shrine of Saint James. When a fire destroyed the original medieval entrance in seventeen fifty-eight, the city built the current neoclassical facade, permanently closing off the street's direct access to the interior of the cathedral.
