Baluarte de San Jaime

historic

The Baluarte de San Jaime is a jagged limestone bastion that projects sharply from the Renaissance walls of Dalt Vila. It was built in the sixteenth century to defend Ibiza from Ottoman pirate raids, serving as a platform for heavy artillery to guard the harbor. Engineers designed its angular shape to eliminate blind spots for defenders firing along the curtain walls. Inside the casemate, visitors still find the original iron cannons that once kept the Mediterranean Sea under the watchful eye of the Spanish crown.
