The brick archway framing the entrance to the Old Market, the Mercat Vell, marks the boundary of the Plaça de sa Riba. This square served as the primary landing point for fishing boats and merchant ships bringing goods into Ibiza town for centuries. In eighteen seventy-three, the town council built the neoclassical market hall here to replace the disorganized stalls that cluttered the harbor edge. Fishermen hauled their catch directly onto these stones, where traders negotiated prices before the morning sun rose high.
