Passeig de Vara de Rey

The Passeig de Vara de Rey is a wide, tree-lined promenade marked by the bronze statue of a general standing tall in the center. It serves as the historic divide between the old walled city of Dalt Vila and the modern harbor. General Joaquin Vara de Rey died defending a Spanish outpost in Cuba in eighteen ninety-eight. The town renamed this former military parade ground in his honor, shifting its identity from a barren gravel field into the city's primary social hub.
