The Castillo de Ibiza occupies the highest point of the old town, Dalt Vila. It is a massive complex of stone walls and towers that dominates the skyline. While it began as a fortress for the Moors in the twelfth century, it evolved over hundreds of years into a stronghold for the Spanish crown. King Philip the Fifth added the heavy bastions to defend against cannon fire. Legend says the last governor refused to surrender the castle until he ran out of gunpowder.
