Mercat Vell

landmark

The Mercat Vell stands out with its neoclassical facade featuring four massive columns and a triangular pediment, marking the entrance to the Dalt Vila neighborhood. Built in eighteen seventy-three, this structure replaced a chaotic open-air bazaar with a controlled space for selling local fish and produce. Architect Ignasi Ferretjans designed it to bring order to the city's trade. A bronze plaque on the front still commemorates the inauguration by Queen Isabel the Second, even though she had already been deposed by then.
