Carola is a massive, bright red crane that stands at the edge of the Nervion River. It was built in nineteen fifty-seven for the Euskalduna shipyard to lift heavy ship engines and boilers. The name came from a woman who crossed the river every day by boat to reach her job at the customs office. Workers at the shipyard started calling the crane Carola after her, and the nickname stuck. It remains a fixture of the city long after the shipyards closed.
