Puppy

Forty-three thousand live flowers cover the skin of the forty-foot-tall West Highland White Terrier standing outside the Guggenheim Museum. Jeff Koons built this sculpture for the nineteen ninety-two opening of a gallery in Germany, but it arrived in Bilbao for the museum's inauguration in nineteen ninety-seven. The city intended to keep Puppy for only a few months, yet the public grew attached to the structure. Workers now replant the steel-and-irrigation frame twice every year to keep the terrier blooming.
