The Bilboko Berreginen Museoa occupies the former Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a brick building defined by a prominent rose window and neo-gothic arched doorways. Inside, rows of plaster casts replicate classical sculptures, like the Venus de Milo and the Laocoon group. These copies arrived in the early twentieth century as educational tools for fine arts students. When the city’s industrial boom demanded skilled craftsmen, the museum provided the necessary examples of classical form for those learning to carve and cast.
