The Hotel Carlton occupies a singular triangular block in the Abando district, defined by its massive, curved stone corner that anchors the intersection like the prow of a ship. Designed by Manuel Maria Smith in the nineteen twenties, it served as the headquarters for the Basque government during the Spanish Civil War. A bomb once struck the building while ministers were dining inside, leaving a gaping hole in the structure, yet the meeting continued in a different room without interrupting the meal.
