The palm trees lining the gravel paths of Alderdi Eder Park stand directly in front of the San Sebastián City Hall. This land was once the site of the Grand Casino, which opened in eighteen eighty-seven. High society gambled here during the summer months while the Spanish royal court summered nearby. In nineteen twenty-four, gambling was outlawed, forcing the casino to close its doors. The building transitioned into the municipal headquarters, while the surrounding gardens remained a promenade for citizens rather than aristocrats.
