Tabakalera

The massive granite walls of Tabakalera rise above the Urumea River like a fortress of industry. Built in nineteen thirteen, this building spent decades as a tobacco factory where hundreds of local women rolled cigars by hand. The factory ceased production in two thousand three, leaving behind a hollow shell that dominated the skyline. Architects transformed the interior into an international center for contemporary culture, keeping the original stone facade while carving out a cavernous atrium that connects the old city with Egia.
