Gipuzkoa Plaza

A heavy iron gate encircles the center of Gipuzkoa Plaza, enclosing a dense, tangled thicket of magnolia trees and a duck pond that has been here since the plaza opened in eighteen seventy-seven. The provincial government built this park to serve as a lush, quiet heart for a city that had just torn down its own defensive walls. Antonio Cortázar designed the layout, but the pond remains the constant, fed by a stream that once ran through the open fields outside the old city gates.
